QUICK REVIEW

Pros The Smart Strider 695 CSE elliptical is a good match for many beginners, being well-equipped with training programs and special features to keep workouts interesting. It has a rear drive, which makes it easy to keep a good posture during training, and its 18” stride is an ideal match for those with smaller frames. This Smart Strider also has an 18-pound drive, which is satisfactory for all but the heaviest riders in terms of producing a smooth ride. Other highlights include cushioned pedals, a power incline for target-toning your muscles, a workout fan, 24 preloaded workout apps, iFit readiness, iPod-compatible speakers and a ledge for your tablet computer. Set-up time is only about 15 minutes because the unit arrives mostly assembled.
Cons A shortcoming of the 695 CSE elliptical is its lack of a wireless heart rate monitor. Contact grip sensors are provided, but these aren't as accurate or convenient as the wireless alternative on higher model numbers. Another possible drawback is the machine’s footprint, which is 80 inches long. You can fold the Smart Strider after workout time but might prefer a trainer that you can always keep set up. Front drive and center drive elliptical machines need less floor space.
Summary The ProForm 695 CSE can be a good match for beginners and people who already have some elliptical experience. It offers a good range of challenge with its 18-pound resistance system and electronic incline. This trainer also helps keep motivation high with plenty of program options, a tablet holder and MP3 speakers. We'd check out higher model numbers before buying though, as ProForm sometimes offers better deals on more advanced Striders.

ProForm Smart Strider 695 CSE Detailed Overview

The foldable ProForm Smart Strider 695 CSE elliptical ($1,299) gives you a low-cost way to tone your whole body without stressing your frame through harsh impact. It’s compatible with unlimited iFit workout downloads in standard, video and Google Maps formats (iFit membership required) and also has a built-in selection of two dozen training programs. With access to a different routine anytime, you can keep your motivation high and have a better shot at following through on fitness goals. This model also has a sound system for MP3s and can securely display your tablet computer. Your tablet can connect as a secondary data monitor or just serve as your entertainment/multitasking station during exercise.

The ProForm 695 CSE elliptical console has a large data window for showing time, distance, calories and pulse. It measures pulse with grips on the handlebars. Additionally the console has a round display to indicate exertion level (Endurance, Tempo or Peak) based on Watts per kilogram; color-coded lights let you see your output in a quick glance.

ProForm Smart Striders recruit the upper body and lower body at once. The 695 CSE lets you choose from 20 resistance levels for the elliptical footpath, with the top setting being equivalent to 18 pounds. For a literal boost with the benefit of better muscle tone you can add incline to your training with a max setting of 10 percent. Pedals on this Strider are cushioned, as are the handgrips, to help you keep comfortable and maximize endurance. This model also has a personal cooling fan and integrated drink holder.

Our Least Favorite Features

  • iFit access requires connecting your own mobile device whereas the 895 CSE has a built-in screen for iFit video and scenic Google Maps workouts

  • So-so warranty has less value compared with those of higher model numbers

The Bottom Line

ProForm’s new 695 CSE elliptical for 2017 is a fun match for people in the earlier stages of elliptical training. It has adequate force to keep a beginner challenged, motivated and reaching new levels of physical fitness. It’s especially favored by smaller trainees who find that standard health club ellipticals are a bit too large for their strides.

Keep in mind though that the 695 lacks wireless heart rate monitoring… and accurate cardio monitoring, for many of us, goes hand-in-hand with cardio training. If you’d like the convenience of wireless telemetry built into your elliptical, consider the ProForm 895 CSE instead. Another perk of choosing the 895 CSE is its touchscreen control panel for accessing preloaded workouts, iFit as well as internet access.
